so... i heard through the grape vine that kanye west was pretty good at coachella. i just got around to watching most of his videos... considering he performed around 13 songs. he said this while on stage:
"When I made the album, I was in a really dark place in my life...losing everything that was dear to me... To still love me after everything you've seen me say on TV...to still have fans...I really appreciate you all tonight, because I'm only trying to say and do what's right."
"I'm not the best singer in the world... So many times I thought about not being here, but you make it all worth it."

even if you're not a fan of the genius that is kanye west. if you disapprove of his in your face antics or find him 'pretentious'. i say... can't we all find common ground with the love we feel for our mama? :)

that’s only 30 years ago. time wise, it could be compared to the blink of an eye.
on friday, i saw a play in indianapolis called ‘the gospel according to james’. it told the story behind the most famous picture and subsequently poster child of lynching. what was ironic was the lynching took place in marion, a town in northern indiana. the story goes…

Eighty years ago, two young African-American men, Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith, were lynched in the town center of Marion, Ind. The night before, on Aug. 6, 1930, they had been arrested and charged with the armed robbery and murder of a white factory worker, Claude Deeter, and the rape of his companion, Mary Ball.

however, the story becomes very convoluted because, there was a third boy james cameron who somehow escaped the lynching. years later, mary ball claimed she was not raped. so, the story (to me anyway) is very strange and has a lot of loose ends.

anyway, on our way home my mom and i stopped in marion to see if there was anything in the museum about it, etc. because, in the play james cameron talked about how he wanted to turn the court house where the boys were hung into a ‘holocaust’ type museum for every person that had been lynched. we pulled up to the courthouse… nothing. however, there were many plaques. for vietnam veterans, even for ‘the first white man to step foot in marion.’

so, we found the museum… no trace of anything. i decided to ask the guy at the desk. when i did, he just laughed without looking at me and said ‘no there would definitely not be an exhibit on that.”

i guess marion, indiana thinks they can pick and choose their history.

just recently, and by recently i mean over the past year or so i have developed this love for zach galifianakis... and i haven't even seen the hangover. :0!
anyway, i watched his stand-up dvd the other night and i was dying the whole way through. he sincerely is one of the funniest people alive today. his stand-up cannot be beat.

here are a few of my favorite zach jokes:

My New Year's resolution was to stop saying "you go girl" to myself.

For 8 years now I've been addicted to cold turkey. When I tell people I'm quitting cold turkey, they say,"What are you quitting?", I'm fucking quitting cold turkey.

Sometimes, I like to read the bible in public and yell out, "Oh Bullshit!"

I want to start an all-boy Country trio, and call it The Chixie Dicks.

My life is so repetitive. Isn’t life in general repetitive? Sleep. Eat. Work. Sleep. Eat. Work. Sleep. Eat. Work. Sleep. Eat. Work. Sleep. Eat. Work. Sleep. Eat. Work. I think people sometimes forget we’re just animals. We put all these expectations on ourselves and other people that we’re not necessarily meant to meet. Like, in my Anthropology book I read, we’re the first living things to ever question our existence. Imagine. Not caring about origin, or living, or dying, or Hollywood, or Nobel Peace Prizes, or traffic tickets, or holding hands, or parties you’re not invited to, or sleeping past your alarm. Just merely existing.

DFF 2011.

The Disposable Film Festival's website reads,
"Everyone has become a Disposable Filmmaker: directors of Saturday night cell phone videos, actors under the eyes of security cameras, and narrators before their webcams. Let's face it - we live in an age of disposable film. Now it's time to do something creative with it."

I'll admit, I may be a tad biased with my overt love for the film festival because March 24 will be the second time they show one of my shorts. However, DFF is special... and i don't think anyone can deny that. Never have I been to a festival where everyone has treated each other with such respect and generosity. DFF is about film, art, and creating. After all, isn't that why festivals were initially started?

This year, DFF is doing a filmmaker spotlight on Christopher McManus. I met him last year at DFF when we both had shorts in the program. This guy is bomb, and I have no other word to describe him. He does things with puppets and editing, that I didn't even know were possible. This is one of my faves.

This year at DFF, Pomplamoose will perform live. They're won of my favorite bands so, I'm really bummed I can't attend but, this is great for DFF! Here's one of my many favorite covers they've done by the amazing Edith Piaf.
